چکیده

“What they all overlook is the fact that they came to know Chelonia long after it had been cut down to a mere trace of its primitive abundance. They either hunt it today in the few places where schools hold out, or they take the trickle of waifs and stragglers that still faintly outline the old great feeding range of the species. The young men of today catch about as many turtles in a season as their fathers did, and so see no cause for alarm. What they do not know, though, is that the scattering of schooners and canoes that hunt Chelonia in the 1900s is picking about among the ruins of the great turtle fishery of the centuries before. But that is what it is doing. The documentation is voluminous and clear.” Archie Carr (1955: 241-242).

Evaluation of hematological and plasma biochemical parameters in green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas Linnaeus, 1758) from nesting colonies of the northern coast the Sea of Oman

The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) has been a species of global concern for decades. As an attempt to study health status of nesting green turtles, Blood biochemistry and hematological values were obtained from 18 clinically normal, nesting female green sea turtles on the northern coast of the sea of Oman. Mean curved carapace length (CCL) was 111±4 cm with a range of 103—122 cm. Barnacles were ...

Spatio-temporal patterns of juvenile marine turtle occurrence in waters of the European continental shelf

We present data spanning approximately 100 years regarding the spatial and temporal occurrence of marine turtle sightings and strandings in the northeast Atlantic from two public recording schemes and demonstrate potential signals of changing population status. Records of loggerhead (n = 317) and Kemp’s ridley (n = 44) turtles occurring on the European continental shelf were most prevalent duri...

Some Aspects of Electrolyte Excretion in the Green Turtle, Chelonia Mydas Mydas.

Except for the brief period of egg-laying, five species of turtle are strictly marine: namely, the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the loggerhead turtle (Caretta carettd), Ridley's turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), the hawksbill turtle (L. imbricatd) and the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Reptiles in the sea, like marine fish and marine birds, have a high intake of electrolytes; yet, a...

Underwater hearing in the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta): a comparison of behavioral and auditory evoked potential audiograms.

The purpose of this study was to compare underwater behavioral and auditory evoked potential (AEP) audiograms in a single captive adult loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The behavioral audiogram was collected using a go/no-go response procedure and a modified staircase method of threshold determination. AEP thresholds were measured using subdermal electrodes placed beneath the frontopari...
